Denison-Schleswig scored 14 points in a 14 second span and built a quick lead early in the first quarter but Storm Lake would storm back to beat the Monarchs 36-27 Friday night at Tornado Field.
Storm Lake scored touchdowns on their final three possessions of the first half to take a 22-21 lead, they would then score a touchdown on the opening drive of the 2nd half to take a 30-21 lead.
The Tornado defense held Denison-Schleswig to 44 yards of offense in the 2nd half and 223 total yards for the game. Storm Lake’s offense put up 340 total yards. Quarterback Charlie Dvergsten was 18-of-23 for 204 yards and three touchdown passes and ran the ball ten times for 56 yards. Dvergsten, who came into the game leading the state in passing yards, now has 21 touchdown passes on the year.
Cam Boyd had 10 receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown and he also threw a 16 yard touchdown pass to Luke Richardson. Rylan Richardson, who scored the Tornadoes first touchdown on a five yard run, caught three passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Bobby Boeckman had three receptions for 48 yards.
The win puts Storm Lake 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the district. They will host Spencer (5-2 overall, 3-0 in the district) next Friday at 7pm.
