Newell-Fonda basketball teams sweep past Pocahontas Area

The Newell-Fonda Mustang basketball teams swept past the Pocahontas Area Indians with the 1A #2 Mustangs winning 61-23 and the Mustang boys winning 66-57.

The girls game saw the 1A #2 Newell-Fonda Mustangs roll out of the gate to a 10-0 lead in the first 1:40 of the first quarter. The Pocahontas Area Indians would answer with a 4-3 run to cut the lead to 13-4. After the first quarter, the Mustangs would roll again to a 13-0 run to lead 26-4. The second quarter would be a slower start for both teams before the Mustangs used an 18-7 to lead 44-11 at the half.

The Mustangs would go on to win the game 61-23. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Isabel Bartek with 14 points and McKenna Seivers (Player of the Game)/Kierra Jungers both with 11 points. Khloe Mefferd led the Indians with 6 points and Madison Vial/Amanda Davis with 4 points. The Mustangs improve to 3-0, the Indians fall to 2-2. Up next the Mustangs host 1A #10 Bishop Garrigan on Thursday night and the Indians travel to Alta-Aurelia on Friday night (Broadcast on KAYL).

The boys game again saw a fast start for the Mustangs as they grabbed an early 15-3 lead prompting an Indians timeout. After the timeout, the Indians would close the gap with an 11-8 run to trail 22-14 after one. The Indians would close the gap further with a 6-4 run to cut the lead to 26-20. The Mustangs would again have the answer as they closed out the half on a 12-8 run to lead 38-28 at the half.

The Indians would storm out of the halftime break on an 18-11 run to cut the lead to 49-46. That would be as close as the Indians would get. The Mustangs would close out the quarter on a 4-0 run, and all told a 15-0 run to lead 64-46 in the fourth. The Mustangs would go on to win 66-57.

The win improved the Mustangs to 2-2, and the loss dropped the Indians to 0-3. Up next the Mustangs host Bishop Garrigan on Thursday night and the Indians travel to Alta-Aurelia on Friday night (Broadcast on KAYL). The Mustangs were led by Jacksyn Hogrefe with 24 points, Max Carlson with 12 points, and the Indians were led by Gabe Ehn with 12 points and Ethan Behrens/Lucas Kopriva both with 10 points.
