Sioux Central Softball Holds on to Defeat Newell Fonda

Sioux Central withstood a late rally in their 6-5 win over #9 in 1A Newell Fonda tonight (Thur) in Peterson.

The Rebels jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. A two-run 1st inning included an RBI single by Natalie Laursen. Sioux Central scored three in the 3rd as they had four hits in that frame. Avery Wilson drove in two runs with a single, and Morgan Christian delivered an RBI single.

Each team scored a run in the 4th, as Anna Mercer’s RBI single got Newell Fonda on the board, and Nichole Hart answered with an RBI single in the bottom half to make the score 6-1. The Mustangs scored single runs in the next two innings. Kierra Jungers led off the top of the 7th with a single, and Kinzee Hinders followed with a two-run homer to right-center to make it a one-run game. Bradi Krager retired the next two batters, but the next two batters reached base on errors. With the tying run on 2nd base and the go-ahead run on 1st, Krager regrouped and got a lineout to shortstop to preserve the Rebels win.

Newell Fonda had nine hits and Sioux Central had seven, but Newell Fonds left ten on base compared to three for the Rebels. Krager struck out seven batters, and reached base all three times at-bat, including two hits and scored two runs. Hart also had two hits. Jungers fanned 13 batters, and at the plate had three hits, an RBI, and her pinch runner Camryn Puhrmann scored twice.

Sioux Central ties Newell Fonda atop the Twin Lakes Conference in the loss column as they go to 15-5, 7-1 TLC, and Newell Fonda is 19-6, 5-1.

Sioux Central has a makeup game tomorrow (Fri) at South Central Calhoun starting at 4pm. They’ll play Saturday in a tournament in Milford.
