The Pocahontas Area girls opened Tuesday’s non-conference basketball doubleheader in Pocahontas with a 61-26 win over Ridge View.
The Indians started the game on a 16-0 run and never looked back. Ridge View didn’t score until hitting a free throw with 1:53 left in the 1st quarter. Poky scored the last 13 points of the 1st half to build a 37-10 lead at halftime, and the 35-point continuous clock rule kicked in early in the 4th quarter.
Madison’s Vial registered her second straight 20-plus game to begin the season with 23 points. Jenna Vonnahme had 15, and Khloe Mefferd added 10. Vial and Mefferd combined to hit all five of Poky’s threes. Faith Freese topped the Raptors with 8 points, and Madison Stowater had 7.
The Poky girls are now 1-1, while Ridge View is 0-1.
The Ridge View boys coasted to a 72-42 triumph over Pocahontas Area in the season opener for both teams.
The Raptors never trailed in the game. Ridge View was up 21-8 at the end of the 1st quarter, and put together a 23-0 run to end the 1st half to take a 54-19 lead at the break. The Raptors stretched it to a 25-0 run as the 3rd quarter began to get the running clock going with 6:50 left in the 3rd.
Ridge View featured a balanced attack as Kinnick Jensen had 16 points, followed by Gabe Chance with 14, and Zach Kolpin contributed 11. The Indians were led by Ethan Behrens with 14.
The Ridge View boys play this Thursday night at Alta Aurelia, which will be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM.
The Ridge View girls and boys visit Lawton Bronson on Friday.
