Pocahontas Area Sweeps Alta Aurelia; Boys Win Thriller

The Pocahontas Area boys basketball team held on and picked up their first win of the season 60-57 over Alta Aurelia Friday in Pocahontas.

Poky only trailed briefly early on. They led 11-8 after the 1st quarter and 23-21 at halftime. A three at the buzzer to close the 3rd quarter by Jack Gerdes gave the Indians their biggest lead at 39-27.

The Warriors stayed within striking distance, and got within one on two occasions down the stretch. A three by Angus Miller with 13.6 seconds left cut Poky’s lead to 58-57. The Warriors committed a foul and Karson Welander made the back end of two free throws. After back to back timeouts were called, Alta Aurelia turned the ball and fouled Blake Bunda with 5.2 seconds left. Bunda made the first free throw, missed the second, and the Warriors were unable to get a three point shot off in time.

Gerdes had four threes and led four Indians in double figures with 17. Bunda had 15, Gabe Ehn 14, and Welander had 12. Sam Sennert led the Warriors with 15, and Miller had 12 points on four threes.

Poky is now 1-2, dropping Alta Aurelia to 2-3. Poky coach Avery Busta talked afterward…

The Pocahontas Area girls stayed undefeated, as they opened the doubleheader with a 65-29 win over Alta Aurelia.

The Indians never trailed, as they enjoyed a stellar 1st half in taking a 50-16 lead into halftime. Poky got the continuous clock going with 3:20 left in the 3rd.

Madison Vial topped Poky with 16, followed by Khloe Mefferd with 11, and Kristin Axman had 10. Nora Peterson had 12 for the Warriors.

Poky is now 4-0, and Alta Aurelia is 2-4. Poky coach Robert Maske chatted after the game…

The Alta Aurelia teams host Kingsley Pierson Monday, while the Poky teams Monday host East Sac.
