OA-BCIG Falls Short in 2nd Round of Playoffs

A tie-breaking touchdown following an 11-minute drive in the 2nd half lifted Hinton to a 21-14 win at OA-BCIG in a Class 1A 2nd round playoff game.

Hinton wound up punting on the opening drive of the game, but their defense intercepted a pass on the Falcons 2nd offensive play, giving Hinton the ball at the OA-BCIG 25 yard line. Five plays later, the Blackhawks got into the end zone on a four yard run. OA-BCIG put together a drive on the next series, but another interception gave Hinton the ball at their 27. There were four punts and a turnover on downs over the next five possessions. Right before halftime, OA-BCIG put together a ten play 72 yard drive that ended with a three yard touchdown pass from Brysen Kolar to Jaxx DeJean with one second on the clock to tie the score at 7-7.

OA-BCIG drove the ball inside the five to start the 2nd half, but turned the ball over on downs. Hinton took over at the four, but marched to the end zone as quarterback Gabe Anderson’s 71 yard touchdown run put them up 14-7. OA-BCIG answered with a eight play 57 yard drive that took less than a minute. Kolar’s six yard touchdown pass to DeJean tied the score at 14-14 with 5:44 to go in the 3rd.

Hinton then chewed up the clocked with an 18 play 72 yard touchdown drive that lasted 11:03. Cole Friessen’s three yard touchdown run put the score at 21-14. OA-BCIG got one first down on the next series, but they punted faced with 4th and 10 from their 30 yard line, giving Hinton the ball with 4:09 left at their 41. Hinton got one first down, but were forced to punt. The Falcons took over at their 24 with 2:15, but were unable to get a first down. Hinton took over at the Falcons 30 with 1:50 left, and took the clock down to 7.8 seconds left as they turned it over on downs at the Falcons 21. A series of laterals by OA-BCIG were ultimately unsuccessful.

254 of Hinton’s 263 yards were on the ground. Anderson rushed 30 times for 180 yards.

Kolar threw for 211 yards, Jack Gilbert had seven catches for 102 yards, and Kade Spotts rushed 14 times for 55 yards.

Hinton’s second win over the Falcons this year puts them at 9-1. They’ll host Underwood in a state quarterfinal game next Friday.
