Comebacks are becoming a staple of the Newell Fonda volleyball team, as the #7 in 1A Mustangs overcame a 2-0 deficit against Alta Aurelia for a five-set victory Tuesday in Newell, repeating a feat they accomplished last week against East Sac.
Alta Aurelia took the lead for good at 6-5 in the opening set, on their way to a 25-19 win. The Warriors never trailed in the next set, winning 25-23.
The Mustangs took the lead for good at 6-5 in the 3rd set, and won it 25-16. Newell Fonda led all the way in the 4th, and gained a 25-12 triumph.
Alta Aurelia scored the opening two points in the 5th set, but kills by Anna Mercer and Kinzee Hinders put the Mustangs up 4-3. Newell Fonda stretched the advantage as high as four, and held a late 13-11 lead. A kill by Breyer Anderson pulled the Warriors within one, and they scored the next two as well to give them a match-point opportunity, but the last three went to the Mustangs for a 16-14 win.
This marked the second consecutive year Alta Aurelia and Newell Fonda went all five sets, and third in the last five. Alta Aurelia prevailed in last year’s matchup.
Newell Fonda is now 5-2 overall, and 3-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference. The Mustangs host Southeast Valley this Thursday.
Alta Aurelia (2-1, 1-1) plays at Sioux Central on Thursday.
