Newell Fonda Basketball Teams Sweep Poky

The #3 in 1A Newell Fonda girls defeated #13 in 2A Pocahontas Area tonight 64-39 in Newell.

The Mustangs led 15-9 after the 1st quarter, and a late 2nd quarter run gave them a 38-20 lead at halftime. The Newell Fonda defense held Poky scoreless for the first seven minutes of the 3rd quarter, building a 56-23 lead after the 3rd.

Kinzee Hinders had 14 points for Newell Fonda, followed by Rylee Hogrefe with 10. Khloe Mefferd had 9 to lead Pocahontas Area, as the Indians drop to 12-5, while Newell Fonda improves to 12-2.

The Newell Fonda boys prevailed 75-54.

A back and forth 1st quarter ended with Newell Fonda up 19-16, as they fought back from a five points deficit and kept the lead the rest of the way. Fueled by Jacksyn Hogrefe’s 16 points in the 2nd quarter, the Mustangs took a 42-26 lead into halftime, and were never seriously threatened in the 2nd half.

Hogrefe ended up with 29, and Mason Hoberman added 13, as the Mustangs go to 10-4.

Three Indians hit double figures including Gabe Ehn with 18, Karson Welander had 17, and Caleb Roberts had 12. Pocahontas Area is now 2-14.

The Newell Fonda teams tomorrow (Fri) host South Central Calhoun.

The Poky teams play at Storm Lake St. Mary’s, and they’ll be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM.
