A four-run 5th inning helped the Newell Fonda baseball team to a 5-2 victory in Fonda over Bishop Garrigan tonight (Sat), giving the Mustangs their 4th district title in the last five years.
A two-out RBI single by Mason Hoberman in the 1st inning put Newell Fonda up 1-0.
In the 2nd, three straight singles loaded the bases for Garrigan with nobody out. A sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1, and after another single loaded the bases again, an RBI groundout gave the Golden Bears a 2-1 advantage.
In the 3rd, Garrigan put runners on 1st and 3rd with one out thanks to a double, a passed ball, and a walk. Ryan Greenfield took over pitching for the Mustangs and got a short flyout to center, followed by a groundout to keep it a one-run game.
Newell Fonda’s big 5th inning began with a single by Carter Sievers. After a flyout, Sievers stole 2nd base, and scored the tying run when Ty Tauber reached on a throwing error. Back to back walks loaded the bases with one out and led to a pitching change. On an 0-2 pitch, Max Carlson delivered the Rex Chevrolet GMC of Odebolt Play of The Game with a two-RBI single to put the Mustangs ahead to stay. After a strikeout, Trevor Tauber reached on an error to load the bases, and then a walk to Ryan Greenfield forced in a run for the final margin.
Greenfield, the Rex Chevrolet GMC of Odebolt Player of the Game, walked the leadoff batter in the 6th, but retired the final six batters he faced. Greenfield surrendered only one single and two walks in 4 and 2/3 innings, struck out one, and threw just 50 pitches. In 2 and 1/3 innings, starter Max Carlson also threw 50 pitches, allowed five hits, a walk, and struck out two. Golden Bears starter Andrew Fogarty pitched 4 and 1/3 before giving way to Nathan Merron. Garrigan had six hits and the Mustangs had four.
