Baseball District Semifinals Recap in Ida Grove; OA-BCIG Wins in Walkoff Fashion; Poky Falls Short

Tuesday’s 2A baseball district semifinal doubleheader in Ida Grove started with Carroll Kuemper defeating Pocahontas Area 7-5.

Kuemper opened the scoring with a two-run 3rd inning. The Indians took the lead with four in the 4th, capped by a two-run homer by Blake Bunda to put Poky on top 4-2. The Knights tied in with two in the bottom of the 4th, and scored two more in the 5th. Each team scored a run in the 6th, as Poky’s Trevor Sturhenberg hit an RBI single. Poky brought the tying run to the plate in the 7th, but a groundout ended the game. The Indians finish at 15-11.

The second contest ended dramatically as down by two in the bottom of the 7th with the bases loaded, Jaxx DeJean lifted a drive to deep left-center field that fell in, cleared the bases, and gave district top-seed OA-BCIG a 10-9 win over Southeast Valley.

Southeast Valley took a 5-1 lead after four innings. An RBI single by Brysen Kolar in the 5th brought the Falcons within 5-2. OA-BCIG took the lead with a five-run 6th that included DeJean’s RBI double. A throwing error to first base on a dropped third strike with two outs brought in two runs that gave OA-BCIG a 6-5 lead, and they added another as a result of an error. The Jaguars scored four in the 7th to regain the lead. An error and two batters were hit by a pitch in the bottom of the 7th which set up the walk-off by DeJean.

OA-BCIG is now 14-8. They’ll host Kuemper (17-17) in a district final Saturday at 7pm. Southeast Valley ends at 9-14.
