Alta Aurelia defeat Newell Fonda in a match that went all five sets tonight (Tues) in Alta, winning the 5th set 16-14.
Alta Aurelia led early in the opening set, but Newell Fonda took their first lead at 12-11 and never trailed in the set after that. The score was tied on four occasions after that including 20-20, but the Mustangs ended on a 5-1 run to take the set 25-21.
The Warriors never trailed in the 2nd set, winning it 25-14. Raelee Page ignited a 9-0 start for Alta Aurelia in the set. The Mustangs followed that stretch with six straight points of their own, but a 10-2 run by the Warriors helped them put it away.
Alta Aurelia built a three point lead early in the 3rd set, but Newell Fonda came back and went up as much as 15-11. The Warriors fought back to tie it, and later held a 23-20 advantage until Newell Fonda scored the next four points. Alta Aurelia stayed alive to make it 24-24, but a Kinzee Hinders kill followed by an ace serve gave the Mustangs the set.
Alta Aurelia never trailed in the 4th set, winning it 25-17.
Newell Fonda scored the first two points in the 5th set. The Mustangs took a couple of four-point leads, including 11-7, which led Alta Aurelia to call their final timeout. The Warriors responded with a 3-0 run, which led to the Mustangs spending their last timeout. A kill by Hinders made it 12-10. Alta Aurelia then got within one, and an ace by Page tied it. Another Hinders kill gave Newell Fonda a 13-12 edge, but Breyer Anderson put the ball down to tie the score again. A kill by Ally Watts gave the Warriors a chance for set point, but Kierra Jungers delivered a kill to tie it at 14-14. Alta Aurelia went back on top, and then Ella Nielsen’s kill secured the win for the Warriors.
Nora Peterson had 12 kills for the Warriors, and Nielsen followed with ten. Alta Aurelia goes to 3-0 on the season. The Warriors host Sioux Central on Thursday.
Newell Fonda (1-1) visits Southeast Valley Thursday.
