BVU Announces Restructured Athletics Program

Buena Vista University President Brian Lenzmeier has announced changes to the BVU Athletics program for the upcoming year.

Amy Maier, formerly Associate Director of Athletics, has been appointed the Interim Director of Athletics for the 2023-2024 academic year. She will be supported by BVU Head Coaches Trevor Johnson and Will Baumann, as they join Head Baseball Coach Steve Eddie as Assistant Directors of Athletics.

Maier succeeds the previous Director of Athletics, Scott Brown in this role, and with the support of Eddie, Johnson, and Baumann, will oversee 20 NCAA Division III teams. “We are grateful for Scott’s dedication to BVU Athletics, and wish him all the best,” said Buena Vista University President Brian Lenzmeier. “I am very excited about our new athletics structure and believe this team will be fundamental in building success for our student-athletes.”

Maier has been a key member of BVU Athletics for the past nine years, acting as chief operations officer for the department. She is also the Senior Woman Administrator for BVU Athletics.

Johnson will begin his fifth season as the Head Men’s Basketball coach. In 2020, he was listed among the Top 30-Under-30 coaches by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and has guided the Beavers to a pair of conference tournament championship game appearances.

Baumann will start his second season as the Head Volleyball Coach. In his first year, he guided the Beavers to a third-place ARC regular season finish, and a spot into the A-R-C Tournament championship match.

Eddie is starting his 24th season with the Beavers and his third year as Assistant Director of Athletics. Now a five-time Coach of the Year, Eddie has led the Beavers to back-to-back conference titles, winning four overall.

“Amy has been such an integral part of our athletics department, while Steve, Trevor, and Will have each created tremendous team cultures that you see play out on the field and the court,” said Lenzmeier. “Between her leadership and our strong coaching talent, we are moving towards a very exciting and bright future for BVU Athletics.”

The official start of the Beavers fall athletic season begins Friday, September 1 as both men’s and women’s soccer take on the Bethany Lutheran Vikings at home. Women’s volleyball will be on the road that day, taking part in the Grinnell/Central Invitational.
