Spencer Woman Charged With Assaulting Jailer After Trespassing Arrest

A Spencer woman was arrested this week after being accused of trying to enter a residence without permission, and later received an additional charge for assaulting a jail staff member.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, they received a call for help at 6:50pm Wednesday at 2030 360th Street in Spencer. The caller reported that a female had just tried to enter her home after being told to leave. The female had already left when deputies arrived, but the victim was able to positively identify the female as 34-year-old Jessica Thornton. Thornton was apprehended after she was stopped by the Spencer Police Department at the 9th Street and Grand Avenue intersection.

Thornton was arrested and booked into the Clay County Jail on simple misdemeanor charges of Assault and Trespassing. While at the jail, Thornton allegedly assaulted a Clay County jailer. She was subsequently charged with Assault on a Person of Certain Occupations With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, a class D felony.
