Buena Vista County Fatalities

According to a press release from the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, on August 20th at approximately 4:09 pm, a fatality car accident occurred in rural Buena Vista County. According to Sheriff Kory Elston, a southbound vehicle driven by 76-year-old Ellen Stevens of Alta pulled out from the stop sign at 60th Avenue to turn east onto county road C63. A westbound vehicle driven by 59-year-old Stephan Baxter of rural Alta collided with the Stevens vehicle. Baxter was pronounced deceased at the scene. Ellen Stevens and a passenger, 79-year-old Leroy Stevens of Alta were transported to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center by Storm Lake Ambulance. Leroy was later transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, where he passed away from injuries sustained in the accident. Assisting at the scene was the Iowa State Patrol, the Alta Fire Department, the Storm Lake Police Department, Storm Lake Ambulance, and the Buena Vista County Medical Examiner’s Office. The accident remains under investigation.
