A Cherokee man has been sentenced in Sioux City Federal Court to serve 15 years in prison for conspiring to distribute methamphetamine.
According to evidence, 36-year-old Dustin Coates admitted his involvement in a conspiracy that distributed at least 1.4 kilograms of methamphetamine, including 150 grams of pure meth, from March of 2021 into March of last year. On March 8th of 2022, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on Coates’ vehicle. He threw two baggies of methamphetamine from his person while attempting to flee the traffic stop on foot. Coates admitted that he planned to distribute over 60 grams of pure methamphetamine to other persons.
In addition to the 15-year prison sentence, Coates must also serve ten years of supervised release after the prison term. Coates was previously convicted of distribution of a controlled substance in U.S. District Court for South Dakota in 2013.
