Hot Shooting Leads Mustangs Into 1A Semi-Finals

The Newell-Fonda girls basketball team shot 56-percent for the game and their defense forced 25 turnovers in an 81-60 win in the opening round of the class 1A state tournament.

Mary Walker scored 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting, Kierra Jungers connected on 8-of-10 shots for 18 points, and McKenna Sievers had 12 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds. The Mustangs had 21 assists on 34 made baskets.

Newell-Fonda never trailed in the game and built a 47-24 lead at the half and they led 74-46 heading into the 4th quarter.

Woodbine’s outside shooting kept them in the game as the Tigers buried 12-of-27 3-pointers for the game andwere led by Nicole Hoefer who drained five three’s and scored a team high 19 points. Woodbine ends their year with a record of 23-3.

The Mustangs, now 23-2, will face North Linn in the 1A semi-final round Friday at 3:15pm. North Linn (23-1) beat Winfield-Mount Union 68-36 in their quarter-final game.
