Tornado Boys Drop Tourney Opener at Orange City

The Storm Lake boys basketball team’s season ended in the opening round of the 3A tournament as 3rd ranked MOC-Floyd Valley defeated the Tornadoes 86-58 Monday night in Orange City.

The Tornadoes came out aggresive defensively and offensively they made four of their first five shots and built a 16-9 lead but the Dutch would go on a 13-0 run to take the lead 22-16 with five minutes left in the first half. They would lead 39-27 at halftime.

The Tornadoes trailed 52-41 with under two minutes to play in the 3rd quarter only to have the Dutch close the quarter on a 13-3 run to take a 65-44 into the final stanza. MOC-Floyd Valley shot 51-percent for the game while the Tornadoes shot 35-percent. Storm Lake also committed 17 turnovers compared to their eight.

Jaidyn Coon went 14-for-14 at the free throw line and scored a team high 25 points. Jesse Van Kalsbeek was dominant and scored a game high 29 to help the Dutch pick up their 20th win of the season. They will now host Sioux Center Thursday night in a sub-state semi-final.

Storm Lake concludes the year with a record of 4-18. Trevor Turner, Jake Eddie, and Brody Boeckman played their final game in a Tornado uniform.
