Sioux Central Marches on After District Final Win

February 21, 2023 9:22pm

#4 Sioux Central never trailed and broke away in the 2nd quarter in their 80-59 win over South Central Calhoun in a 2A district final Tuesday night at Storm Lake High School.

The Rebels forced a timeout after they jumped to a 6-0 lead.  South Central Calhoun came back with six straight points to tie it, and the Titans also tied it at 8-8 and 10-10 after Sioux Central took two point leads.  Sioux Central closed the 1st quarter on a 6-0 run to go on top 16-10.

SCC scored the next six points to tie the game for the 4th and final time at 16-16.  The Rebels took charge after that, and ended the 2nd quarter on a 20-4 run to take a 36-20 lead into halftime.

Ethan Mills, whose postgame comments can be heard below (2:10), hit three of his four threes early in the 3rd quarter, which forced an SCC timeout, after putting the lead at 47-22, and that proved to be the biggest margin of the night.  The Titans only got as close as 16 the rest of the way.

Carter Boettcher was the top points-getter on the night with 32.  Jake Hargens had 26, and Mills added 16.  Eli Wheelock and Tyler Lightner each had 24 for SCC.  Postgame comments from Rebels coach Stephen Tjaden (4:48) can also be heard below.

South Central Calhoun concludes the year at 17-5.  Sioux Central is now 23-0, and will face Carroll Kuemper in a substate final this coming Saturday night at 7pm in Ida Grove, which will be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM.
