Big Start Lifts HMS Past Alta Aurelia in Districts

Hartley Melvin Sanborn scored the opening 20 points on their way to a 74-47 win over Alta Aurelia in a boys basketball 1A district quarterfinal tonight (Mon) in Hartley.

HMS led 27-7 after the 1st quarter. The Warriors went on a 9-0 run to start the 2nd quarter to get within 27-16. Alta Aurelia got as closed as ten late in the 2nd quarter, but the Hawks ended the half with nine straight points for a 45-26 halftime lead. HMS extended it to a 16-0 run into the 3rd quarter.

Kooper Ebel scored 22 points for the Hawks, followed by Keevyn Jacobsma who hit four of the team’s seven threes and had 20 points. Braden Sonksen led the Warriors with 14 points, and Jack Bloom had 13. Those two combined for five of the Warriors six threes.

HMS is now 12-9. They’ll play at Remsen St. Mary’s in a district semifinal on Thursday.

Alta Aurelia’s season concludes with a record of 8-14. Their seniors include Sonksen, Cade Ahnemann, Carson Reinert, and Irving Rodriguez.
