1A #10 Newell-Fonda Mustangs won their Class 1A-Substate 1 opening round game over Lawton-Bronson 73-55

The first quarter saw a total of 12 lead changes as the first six shot makes of the game saw a see-saw affair have the Mustangs up 8-7 with 6:08 to go in the first. During those 12 first quarter lead changes the Eagles would grab the lead at 13-12 at 2:52 after a 6-0 run. The game would see-saw again to an Eagle 18-17 lead with 2:06 to go in the first. The final 2:06 the Mustangs would go on a 10-2 run during which Mason Dicks connected on a three-pointer to push the Mustang lead 27-20 after one. The Mustangs would storm into the second quarter scoring 11 in a row highlighted by back-to-back-to-back threes from Max Carlson, Carter Sievers and Mason Dicks to lead 38-20 with 4:22 to go in the first half. The Mustangs would push the lead to 20 which would be their biggest of the game with 2:56 to go in the half to force an Eagles timeout. After the timeout the Eagles would again chip into the Mustang lead with an 8-1 run to chop the Mustang lead to 42-29 at the half.

The third quarter saw the Eagles get back within nine points in the first few minutes of the third. The Mustangs would respond with a 15-9 run over the final five minutes of the third to lead 58-43 after three. The fourth again saw the Eagles cut the deficit to 12, with a 8-5 run over the first four miuntes of the quarter. However the Mustangs would finish the game on a 10-4 run over the final four minutes en route to a 73-55 win.

The win improves the Mustangs to 17-4 and advances them to the district semi-final Thursday night at GTRA at 7pm (the game will be broadcast on KBVU); the loss ends Lawton-Bronson’s season at 6-16 and the Eagles say goodbye to three seniors

The Mustangs were lead in scoring by the “Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Player of the Game” Carter Sievers with 27 points, Mason Dicks added 17, and Ryan Greenfield/Caden Meyerboth had 11. The Eagles were lead by Kinnick Thoreson with 13 points, Gage Semple with 12 points, and Isaac Stadsvold with 9.
