Storm Lake Basketball Splits With Cherokee–Tornado Wrestlers Beat Braves

It was a busy Tuesday night for Storm Lake athletics as the Tornado basketball team hosted Cherokee and the wrestling team had a dual at Cherokee.

The wrestlers scored a38-37 win over the Braves, winners included, Sebastian Huerta, JJ Najera, Christian Roque, David Santos, Cole McAtee, Miguel Cervantes and Aiden Phillips.

The wrestling team will head back to Cherokee Thursday for the Lakes Conference Tournament.

The Cherokee girls basketball team went on a 15-0 run in the 3rd quarter in their 67-49 win over the Tornadoes. Laney Wolfswinkel scored a game high 19 points leading three Braves in double figures. Storm Lake was led by Maddy Raveling’s 14 points and Adeeya Yanga added 13. Cherokee is now 11-3 overall and 3-2 in the Lakes. Storm Lake falls to 8-8 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

In the boys game, Justin Guynn scored a career high 27 points leading the Tornadoes to a 79-69 win over the visiting Braves. The win was coach Heath Stille’s 100th of his career. After leading 33-27 at the half Storm Lake fell behind 45-40 with just over four minutes to play in the 3rd quarter. The Tornadoes though would catch fire and close the quarter on a 17-0 run to take a 57-45 lead into the final quarter. Jaidyn Coon added 19 points and Brody Boeckman chipped in with ten.

Cherokee was led by Aiden Comstock’s 20 points and Henry Lugar added 16. The Braves fall to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the Lakes Conference. The Tornadoes are now 4-9 on the year and 2-4 in conference play.
