Spirit Lake Sweeps Tornado Basketball Teams

The Spirit Lake girls basketball team won their first conference game of the year as they defeated Storm Lake 53-43 Tuesday night at Tornado Fieldhouse. The Indians built a 24-7 lead after the first twelve minutes of the game but the Tornadoes would hold them scoreless over the last four minutes of the 2nd quarter to pull within 24-12. Storm Lake would cut the deficit to six points at 29-23 midway through the 3rd quarter but never would get any closer.

Spirit Lake’s balanced scoring attack was led by Claire Turner’s12 points. Adeeya Yanga and Maddy Raveling each had eleven to lead the Tornadoes. Yanga also blocked seven shots before fouling out.

Spirit Lake is now 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the Lakes. Storm Lake is also 8-6 overall and now 2-2 in the conference.

The Spirit Lake boys made it a sweep with a 65-57 win over a never say die Tornado team. Storm Lake made only 5-of-24 shots in the first half to fall behind 34-20 at the half. They would fall behind by as many as 19 in the 3rd quarter only to trail 51-35 entering the 4th quarter. The Tornadoes would battle and get as close as five at 60-55 but the Indians did just enough despite some poor free throw shooting down the stretch (9-for-19 for the game).

The Tornadoes on the other hand were 17-for-20 at the foul line. Jaidyn Coon had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Cam Boyd scored 13, and Jake Eddie and Justin Guynn each had 11.

Spirit Lake is now 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the Lakes. Storm Lake falls to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
