Sioux Central Boys Prevail in Clash of Undefeated Teams ; Newell Fonda Girls Win

The Sioux Central boys basketball team kept their undefeated season going with a 72-66 win at Newell Fonda Tuesday night.

The lead changed hands seven times in the 1st half, and there were eight ties. Newell Fonda was up 18-17 after the 1st quarter. Sioux Central closed the 1st half on a 5-2 stretch to take a 33-31 lead into halftime.

The margin was no more than five points either way late into the 3rd quarter. Sioux Central forced a Mustangs timeout with 1:52 left in the 3rd thanks to a 10-2 run to put them up 51-42. The Rebels lead was cut to 54-48 going to the 4th.

Sioux Central built their lead as large as 63-50 with about six minutes left. A three by Guyson Lyman, and another soon after by Mason Dicks with 3:35 remaining helped pull the Mustangs within 66-61. Jake Hargens followed with a dunk for the Rebels, which was followed by a Carter Sievers basket to make it a five point game again. Hargens made back to back free throws with 1:58 left to put the Rebels lead at 70-63, but Mason connected with another three to close the gap to four. Newell Fonda got the ball back inside the final minute still down by that margin, and called timeout with 28 seconds left. After the timeout, the Mustangs were called for a backcourt violation on the inbound. A foul was committed, but Sioux Central missed fhe front end of a one and one. The Mustangs wound up turning the ball over however, and then Carter Boettcher hit two free throws with ten seconds left for the final margin.

Hargens poured in 34 to lead all scorers. Ethan Mills had 15 for the Rebels, and Boettcher added 13. Three Mustangs scored in double figures, as Sievers had 25, Caden Meyer 16, and Dicks had 14.

Newell Fonda had ten threes to Sioux Centrals seven, but Sioux Central got to the line 21 times, making 13 of them, while the Mustangs were 6-8 from the stripe.

Sioux Central snaps a six game losing streak against the Mustangs, and are now 9-0, 3-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference. Newell Fonda goes to 4-1, 2-1.

The 2nd ranked in 1A Newell Fonda girls didn’t trail in their 66-50 win over Sioux Central.

The Mustangs led 24-9 after the 1st quarter, capped by a Laney Hogrefe elbow jumper at the buzzer. Newell Fonda scored ten straight points during the 2nd quarter on their way to a 41-16 lead at halftime. The Mustangs couldn’t get the lead any bigger than that the rest of the way. They did match the 25 point margin twice early in the 4th quarter, but Sioux Central only got as close as the final margin in the final seconds of the game.

Mary Walker topped Newell Fonda was 21 points, and Isabel Bartek had 11. Three Rebels hit double digits, including Morgan Christian 15, Bradi Krager 14, and Kendra Casey had 10.

The Newell Fonda girls are now 7-1 overall, and 3-0 in the Twin Lakes. Sioux Central’s four game winning streak is snapped, as they are now 6-4, 1-2.
