Newell Fonda Hoops Teams Win in Pocahontas

In a matchup of ranked girls teams, #2 in 1A Newell Fonda defeated #8 in 2A Pocahontas Area 67-47 Friday night in Pocahontas.

The Mustangs were never behind, as they led by as many as 13 in the 1st half on their way to a 28-16 halftime lead. Newell Fonda was up by ten going into the 4th quarter. The Indians got within eight in the early stages of the 4th, but the Mustangs scored five straight points to get the margin back to double-figures, where it stayed the rest of the way.

McKenna Sievers led four Mustangs in double-figures with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Mary Walker and Laney Hogrefe each had 12, and Kierra Jungers had 11. Carly Janssen had 13 for Poky, and Abby Oberhelman scored 12.

Newell Fonda’s is now 6-1 overall, and 2-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference. Pocahontas Area goes to 6-2, 2-1, with both of their losses at the hands of the Mustangs.

The Newell Fonda boys 2nd victory over Pocahontas Area this year was by a 92-54 final score.

The Mustangs never trailed, as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Newell Fonda tore up the net for 34 1st quarter points, and had a 64-28 lead at halftime. The Mustangs have scored over 80 points in all of their games this season, and this marks the 2nd time they’ve gone over 90, as they’re now 4-0, and 2-0 in the Twin Lakes.

Carter Sievers racked up 31 points for the Mustangs, followed by Caden Vanden Bosch with 15, and Ryan Greenfield had 11. Ethan Behrens led Pocahontas Area with 17, as they Indians drop to 0-7, 0-3.
