Poky Girls Stun Storm Lake at Buzzer ; Tornado Boys Pick Up First Win

A three-pointer by Paige Melohn just before the buzzer sounded capped a 14-0 run to end the game, as #8 in Class 2A Pocahontas Area defeated Storm Lake 51-48 on Tuesday in Pocahontas.

Prior to the game winner, Poky’s only leads were 2-0, and also 16-14 midway through the 2nd quarter. The Tornadoes went on a 10-0 run which helped them to an 11-4 lead after the 1st quarter. A 14-2 stretch by Storm Lake put them up 28-18 at halftime.

Storm Lake led by nine entering the 4th quarter. A three by Kennadie Miller with under 3:30 to go gave the Tornadoes their biggest lead at 48-37. The Tornadoes would not score again, as the Indians defense forced critical turnovers in the last three minutes, which included a midcourt steal and layup by Carly Janssen with under a minute to go that tied the game at 48-48. Another steal with just over 30 seconds left set up the Melohn game winner.

Melohn hit two of her three from downtown in the 4th, and finished with 11 points. Janssen had 12, including 6 in the final few minutes. Maddy Raveling and Amy Slight each hit two threes, and both had 12 points for Storm Lake. Miller also knocked down a couple of threes and had 8 points.

The Poky girls go into the holiday break 5-1, dropping Storm Lake to 5-3.

The Storm Lake boys were never behind in their 85-49 triumph.

The Tornadoes built a 44-24 lead at halftime, and got the 35-point continuous clock margin with just over four minutes left.

Storm Lake buried 11 threes, led by Cam Boyd’s six to account for 18 points. Justin Guynn led four in double figures with 22, Jaidyn Coon had 14, and Charlie Dvergsten had 13. Ethan Behrens poured in a game-high 27 for Poky.

The Storm Lake boys are now 1-5, and Poky remains winless at 0-5.
