Storm Lake Wins at #11 SCC

The Storm Lake girls basketball improved to 2-0 to start the season with a 60-46 win over 11th ranked in 2A South Central Calhoun on Tuesday in Rockwell City in the Titans season opener.

The Tornadoes were never behind, and raced out to a 12-0 lead. SCC didn’t get their first points until there was 1:40 left in the 1st quarter. Storm Lake led 15-4 after eight minutes of play, and led by as many as 15 in the 1st half, including at halftime as a three by Avery DeHaan with seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter made the score 34-19.

Storm Lake stretched the lead as big as 18 during the 3rd quarter, and took a 45-33 lead into the 4th. A 12-3 run by the Titans brought them within 48-42 with 3:30 left to play. DeHaan answered with a three, and then hit another triple after Storm Lake came up with a steal to quickly put Storm Lake up by 12. DeHaan capped her own 8-0 run with a breakaway layup following a steal at midcourt.

DeHaan wound up with 32 points, including seven of the team’s eight from downtown. The freshman has scored 67 points in her first two varsity games. Adeeya Yanga added 16 for Storm Lake. Riley Batta led the Titans with 25.

This marks the first time Storm Lake has defeated South Central Calhoun in girls basketball. SCC won all nine previous encounters. Comments from Tornadoes coach Nate Reichter can be heard below.

The Storm Lake girls and boys will play at Sioux City North next Tuesday, November 29th. They will be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM, and video streamed on our website. The SCC teams play next Tuesday at South Hamilton.
