November 03, 2022 10:17pm

Newell Fonda scored touchdowns on their first six possessions of the game in their 46-36 win over Gladbrook Reinbeck on Thursday in Newell in the eight-player state quarterfinals.

The Mustangs built a 27-8 halftime lead, as Ryan Greenfield scored two touchdown runs of one yard, and Mason Dicks added two rushing scores.  Mason began the scoring with a six yard touchdown, and then found the end zone on a 25 yard run with 14 seconds to go in the half.

Newell Fonda continued their domination through the 3rd quarter, as they put together a ten play, 55 yard scoring drive in 4:32, which ended in Mason's two yard touchdown run.  After the Mustangs defense forced a three and out, they scored another touchdown on a drive that lasted 6:37, which ended with a Greenfield five yard run.

After Gladbrook Reinbeck scored on a 40 yard pass play, Greenfield capped a 34 yard drive with his 4th touchdown, another one yarder, which made the score 46-14 with 6:17 left.  The Rebels did not give up as they scored on a 36 yard pass, five yard run, and ten yard pass.  In between, they forced a three and out and got an interception.  After they made it a ten point game with 28 seconds left, Gladbrook Reinbeck's two point conversion pass fell short which kept it a two-score game.  After that, a short kickoff was recovered by the Mustangs, and one kneel down sealed the win.

Newell Fonda's defense held Gladbrook Reinbeck to 139 yards in the 1st half.  The Rebels ended up with 353.  Max Carlson got an interception on the opening series of the game, and Greenfield picked off a pass midway through the 3rd quarter.  The Mustangs came up with a fumble recovery in the 3rd quarter as well.

Newell Fonda piled up 389 yards of offense.  Dicks was 9-13 passing for 123 yards, and rushed 26 times for 145.  Greenfield rushed for 52, and had seven catches for 101.  Wyatt Kreft added 69 yards on the ground.
