Mustangs Drop State Tournament Opener

Campbell German pitched a four-hitter and Martensdale-St. Mary’s beat Newell-Fonda 7-2 in the first round of the class 1A state softball tournament Tuesday night in Fort Dodge.

German also led a six-attack going 2-for-4 with a solo homer as the Blue Devils dashed the Mustangs hopes of repeating as 1A state champs.

German went all seven innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking three.

Losing pitcher Kierra Jungers gave up seven runs but only two were earned. She struck out nine, walked four and hit two batters. The Mustang defense committed four errors in the game.

Mary Walker had two of the Mustangs four hits. McKenna Sievers had an RBI single in the 2nd inning and Jungers drove in a run with a double in the 3rd inning.

Martensdale-St. Mary’s will now face Twin Cedars in the semi-final round Wednesday evening. The Mustangs, now 35-5, will play Lisbonwho is also 35-5 in the consolation game Wednesday at 3pm. The game will be broadcast on 97.5FM KBVU
