Ridge View Hangs on to Beat Hinton ; Will Play in Region Final

Another Ridge View power display helped the 14th ranked Raptors to a 6-3 win at #11 Hinton Friday in a 2A region softball semifinal.

Hinton took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd on a two-out RBI double by Jadyn Case. The first 11 Raptors batters were retired by Case until Emma Vohs singled with two outs in the 4th, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.

Addison Schmidt tied the game at 1-1 with a 5th inning leadoff homerun, her 6th of the season. Katie Pickhinke followed with a single, and two batters later Tatum Shepherd crushed her 7th homer of the year to give the Raptors a 3-1 lead.

Ridge View padded the lead with three in the 7th. With the bases loaded and one out, a run scored on an error, Gabi Mason drew a bases loaded walk, and Abby Wandrey hit an RBI single.

The insurance runs came in handy as the Blackhawks rallied in the bottom of the 7th. Hinton got back to back singles to start the inning, followed by a popout, and then another single. The shortstop Vohs made a great play on a grounder deep in the hole to get a force out at 3rd base, which brought in a run and made the score 6-2, putting the Raptors one out away from victory. An error allowed another run to score, and put runners on 2nd and 3rd. With the tying run at the plate, Shepherd replaced Schmidt in the pitching circle, and retired the next batter on a called strike three on a full count pitch.

Hinton had ten hits, to Ridge View’s six. Schmidt picked up the win, striking out a pair of batters. Case recorded 13 strikeouts on the night. Postgame comments from Schmidt, Shepherd, and coach Scott Phelps can be heard below.

While Hinton’s season ends at 21-10, Ridge View (19-8) moves on to play in a region final for the 2nd time in the last three years. The Raptors will try for their 3rd state tournament appearance in school history this coming Monday, July 11th at 7pm against either #2 North Union or Sibley Ocheyedan. That semifinal matchup was postponed to Saturday night. Monday’s region final will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA.
