Palo Alto County Approves New Wind Energy Ordinance that Coincides with Proposed Turbines Project

The Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors have approved a new wind energy ordinance, which paves the way for additional turbines to be constructed in the county.

Vestas Wind Systems wants to build approximately 50 turbines near Lost Island Lake near Ruthven. Palo Alto County currently has around 200 wind turbines. The newest ones would reach 600 feet into the air.

The Supervisors unanimously voted to establish setbacks following three public hearings. The ordinance requires a half-mile setback for any turbine built near Lost Island Lake, homes, or cemeteries.

Vestas North America is a subsidiary of a Danish company, and is the world’s largest manufacturer of wind turbines.
