Final Reading Fails for Allowing Dog Kennels in Storm Lake General Industrial District

The third and final reading of a proposed text amendment to allow dog kennels in Storm Lake’s general industrial zoning district failed due to a split vote at Monday’s city council meeting.

Council members Kevin McKinney and Matt Ricklefs voted in favor of the amendment, while Tyson Rice and Maggie Martinez voted against it. Council member Maria Ramos was absent.

Brent Mangold requested the zoning amendment to install kennels at 2004 Expansion Boulevard. The first reading passed unanimously in May, and the second reading passed on a 3-1 vote earlier this month.

Storm Lake Building and Code Compliance Director Scott Olesen said the City hadn’t received any further comments for or against the proposal. Dog kennels are allowed in the City’s light industrial zoning district.
