Election Date Set For Voters to Decide on Bond Issue for Next Phase of Early Elementary School Project

An election date is now set regarding the issuance of general obligation bonds for the next phase of the Storm Lake Early Elementary School project following approval by the school board today (Wed).

On September 13th, Storm Lake Community School District voters will decide on a 9.95-million dollar bond for the 2nd phase of construction at the Early Elementary, which would add a 1st grade wing to the building.

Business Manager Trudy Pedersen said the district has received more than the 150 valid petition signatures necessary to issue the G.O. Bonds to finance the next phase. Superintendent Dr. Stacey Cole reiterated that property taxes WON’T increase if the bond issue get approved. If voters do approve the bond issue, the district will be able to proceed with the 3rd phase of the Early Elementary project right after the 2nd phase construction is complete. The 3rd phase would not require a bond vote, and would add a pre-K wing to the school.

Board member Emilia Marroquin said it’s important to continue spreading the word that the 2nd phase bond issue won’t lead to tax increases. Board President Dave Skibsted said it’s important that’s understood, and that they get as many district voters to the polls as possible.
