The Storm Lake baseball team is alone in first place in the Lakes Conference thanks to a 14-8 win over Cherokee in a game played Monday night at Storm Lake.
The Tornadoes banged out 13 hits in the game including seven extra base hits highlighted by sophomore Carson Lullmann’s first varsity homer, a two run shot in a five run 4th innning for the Tornadoes. Storm Lake also plated five runs in the 6th inning.
Winning pitcher Sam Dvergsten improved to 3-1 on the year going 4 1/3 innings giving up three runs on seven hits, he struck out five and walked four. Drew Taylor pitched 1 2/3 and Austin Gaffney pitched the 7th inning.
The win moves Storm Lake to 4-0 in the conference and drops Cherokee to 3-1 in the league. Storm Lake has now won 12 straight games and raisestheir record to 15-3. Cherokee falls to 13-3.
The Tornadoes will play Tuesday night at Carroll and will return to conference play Wednesday with a game at E-L-C and they also have a road game at Spencer thisFriday.
The Tornado softball team defeated Cherokee 6-0 behind the pitching of Avery DeHaan. DeHaan, an 8th grader,tossed a two hitter and struck out seven while walking two.Mackenzie Harder had three of the Tornadoes nine hits in the game and Taylor Ripke hit a 2-run homer. Storm Lake is now 8-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
