Storm Lake Police Department Presents Departmental Awards

The Storm Lake Police Department presented 2021 departmental awards to several officers last week during National Police Week.

Each year the department recognizes outstanding efforts on the part of its officers and staff.

The 2021 Police Officer of the Year Award was presented to Officer Mitch McDonald. Officer McDonald has served for five years, and is the department K-9 officer as well as being on the Entry Team and instructing in firearms and active shooter response.

The Civilian of the Year award was presented to Pom Kavan, who recently retired after a lengthy career as a Community Service Officer.

Officer Mitchell Fritz earned the department’s Top Shooter award.

A Chief’s Commendation was presented to officers for an efficient and effective response to a hit-and-run pedestrian incident near Storm Lake High School. Honored were Assistant Chief Patrick Diekman, Lieutenant Matt Younie, Detective Randy Weflen, Detective Bre Nieland, Officer Dulce Salinas and Community Service Officer Pom Kavan.

Assistant Chief Diekman and Lieutenant John Bauer received a commendation for their work in developing the Operation Hoop Dreams community basketball court adjacent to the police station this past year.

Officer Dulce Salinas was honored for her effective efforts in a traffic stop that yielded a seizure of 27 pounds of marijuana, ecstasy and over $66,000 in cash.

Officer McDonald received a commendation, for quick response in detecting a house fire and safely evacuating the residents.

Officers Alyssa Solem and Mitch McDonald were both recognized for outstanding service in impaired driver enforcement.

The entire Storm Lake Police Department received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Pro Patria Award. The honor is presented each year to one large and one small public sector employer for outstanding efforts to accommodate employee service in the military reserves. The department was nominated by local police officer Tyler Munden, who is currently serving in the reserves on deployment.

New this year, the department presented Storm Lake Police Department Service Stripes. The hash marks, to be worn on the uniform sleeve, each hash mark denotes five years of service with the Storm Lake department.
