A Cherokee police officer has been charged after he allegedly hit a six-year-old girl with his pickup truck and then drove away.

52-year-old Michael McGee was cited with leaving or failing to return to the scene of an injury accident after the girl was hit around 3:30 on Friday afternoon. McGee was off-duty when the incident occurred at the intersection of North Roosevelt and Indian Street, which is close to a baseball field in the middle school area.

The Iowa State Patrol said McGee’s truck struck the girl, who was in a crosswalk, and McGee then left the scene.

The girl, who is from Cherokee, was taken to Cherokee Regional Medical Center, and then transported to another hospital. A patrol spokeswoman said the girl’s injuries were not considered life-threatening, and she is in stable condition.
