February 09, 2022 8:07am

A Cherokee man was sentenced this week in Buena Vista County District Court for being involved in an ATM machine fraud incident in Storm Lake last year.

29-year-old Nathan Alafa was sentenced for 2nd Degree Theft, a class D felony. The BV County Attorney, on behalf of the State of Iowa, argued for a conviction and a probation term. The County Attorney resisted Alafa's request for a deferred judgment. The Court granted Alafa's request for a deferred judgment, and he was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Corrections for a period of three years.

In the early morning hours of June 13th of last year, Alafa and 26-year-old Brittany Sumner of Cherokee were accused of depositing an empty envelope into an ATM in Storm Lake for a four-thousand dollar deposit into a personal account. Alafa and Sumner then allegedly conducted a series of ATM withdrawals, bank transfers, and in-person withdrawals that totaled four-thousand dollars from the same account.
