St. Mary's Girls Keep Rolling ; Poky Boys Win

The #9 in 1A Storm Lake St. Mary's girls basketball team won 53-46 at Pocahontas Area on Thursday night.  

The score was tied 9-9 after the 1st quarter, and there were four ties into the early part of the 2nd quarter.  St. Mary's took their first lead at 16-13, and never relinquished the advantage.  The Panthers were up by as many eight in the 1st half, including 30-22 at halftime.  

St. Mary's lead reached as high as 16 late in the 3rd, and the score was 42-28 entering the 4th.  Poky got within seven early in the 4th, and later got within six points as a three-pointer by Abby Oberhelman dropped the St. Mary's lead to 48-42 with 2:47 left.  St. Mary's followed that by converting four free throws to push the lead to ten.  Poky got back within six inside the final minute, but it was too little too late.  

Three Panthers hit double-figures, including Emily Nothwehr with 17, Danika Demers 16, and Karly Mills had a career-high 12 points.  Carly Janssen had 17 for Poky, and Akaysa Duitscher added 13.  

St. Mary's improves to 14-1 overall, and 10-1 in the Twin Lakes Conference, dropping Pocahontas Area to 11-6, 5-4.  

 

The Pocahontas Area boys won over St. Mary's 69-52. 

A St. Mary's free throw starting the score, but Poky then went on a 9-0 run and never looked back.  The Indians were ahead 21-13 after the 1st quarter.  The Poky lead in the 1st half got as big as 13, but St. Mary's closed the half on a 10-3 run to get within 35-29.  

A 5-0 run by Poky early in the 3rd got their lead to 11 points.  St. Mary's cut it back down to 42-34, but another 5-0 Indians run got the lead to double-figures the rest of the game.  Cavin Henrickson hit a last-second three in to close the 3rd quarter which gave Poky a 53-37 lead.  

Gavin Ehn pumped in 20 points for Poky.  Henrickson had 16, and Chase Cook contributed 12.  Mason Laven led the Panthers with 24, and Pablo Pasquel had 11.  

Poky goes to 6-10, 5-4 in the Twin Lakes.  St. Mary's sits at 4-11, 2-8.  

The St. Mary's teams play at Siouxland Christian on Saturday. 

The Poky teams play this coming Tuesday at home against East Sac.
