St. Mary's Basketball Teams Win on Homecoming

The Storm Lake St. Mary's homecoming basketball games on Friday began with the #9 in 1A Panther girls defeating Manson Northwest Webster 40-26.  

St. Mary's ended the 1st quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 16-2 lead after the 1st quarter.  The Courgars tallied eight consecutive points to start the 2nd quarter, and St. Mary's lead at halftime was 21-15.  

A low scoring 3rd quarter ended with the Panthers ahead 26-16.  St. Mary's built their lead as big as 15 during the 4th.  

Danika Demers had 22 points for St. Mary's, and Emily Nothwehr had 12.  The two combined for eight threes.  Sydney Hurd added 6 for the Panthers.  Olivia Sturgis had 9 points for the Cougars.  

St. Mary's is now 11-1, and 7-1 in the Twin Lakes Conference.  Manson Northwest Webster goes to 4-10, 2-5.  


The St. Mary's boys held off a late charge for a 56-54 win over Manson NWW.  

There were three lead changes early, but St. Mary's led after going up 6-4.  The Panthers led by as many as 11 on two occasions in the 1st half, and took a 33-23 lead at the half.  Manson got within seven in the 3rd, but the Panthers later regained an 11 point lead and led 40-33 after the 3rd.  

Bennett Smith hit a three with two minutes left to put St. Mary's on top 50-42.  Moments later, Mason Laven made it a ten point lead on two free throws.  The Cougars hit two free throws with 27 seconds left to get within 54-49.  A free throw by Pablo Pasquel with 20 seconds left boosted the lead to 55-49.  A basket by Colby Essing with 10.5 seconds left was followed to two missed free throws by the Panthers, and then a three by Sean Peters with 1.6 seconds left made the score 55-54.  Laven with fouled with 0.8 seconds left, made the first free throw, missed the second intentionally, and a backcourt leave wasn't close for the final margin.  

Laven ended up with 29 points, and Smith had 14.  They each hit three from downtown.  Brody Poppen led three Cougars in double-figures with 17.  

St. Mary's improves to 4-8, 2-5 Twin Lakes.  Manson NWW 2-12, 1-6.  

The St. Mary's teams play at East Sac on Monday.  Manson visits East Sac on Tuesday.
