Newell Fonda Sweeps ELC

The Newell Fonda girls basketball team avenged their only loss this season, as the top-ranked in 1A Mustangs won the rematch over #4 in 3A Estherville Lincoln Central 59-48 on Thursday in Newell.  

ELC took a 13-9 lead after the 1st quarter.  The Mustangs turned the tide with a 17-0 run to begin the 2nd quarter, and took a 31-20 lead into halftime.  

The Midgets fought back, as they cut Newell Fonda's lead to 42-38 going into the 4th quarter.  ELC got within two points on three different occasions in the 4th, including 45-43 with under five minutes left.  The Mustangs put together a 10-2 run to open the lead to 55-45, and ELC only got as close as seven from there.  

Macy Sievers scored 25 for the Mustangs.  Sievers helped ignite the 2nd quarter surge with 12 points during that span.  Mary Walker ended up with 12 points.  Haylee Stokes had 22 for ELC.  

The Newell Fonda girls are now 11-1 on the season, dropping ELC to 12-2.  


The Newell Fonda boys followed that up with a 68-64 win over the Midgets.  

The only lead for ELC was 36-35 midway through the 3rd quarter.  Newell Fonda led 15-13 after the 1st quarter.  Trey Jungers hit a three before the halftime buzzer to put the Mustangs up 31-27.  

The game was tied three times in the 3rd.  With the score even at 40-40, Mason Dicks and Trey Jungers hit back to back threes for the Mustangs.  Carter Sievers hit a buzzer-beater to cap a 12-2 run to give the Mustangs a 52-42 lead after the 3rd.  

Jungers and Carter Sievers each scored 21 points.  Three Midgets scored in double-figures, led by Owen Larson's 15, all of which were scored in the 2nd half.  

Newell Fonda's record now stands at 9-2, and ELC is 9-3.
