St. Mary's and Alta Aurelia Split Double-Header

The Storm Lake St. Mary's girls basketball team kept their perfect season going with a 51-29 triumph at Alta Aurelia on Tuesday.  

Alta Aurelia's only lead was 5-4.  The Warriors hung tough until St. Mary's went on a 17-3 run from late in the 1st quarter into halftime to grab a 31-15 lead at the break.  The Panthers got the lead to 44-19 after the 3rd quarter.  

Emily Nothwehr had 23 points, and Sydney Hurd was right there with 22 for St. Mary's.  Nora Peterson topped Alta Aurelia with 9 points.  

#9 in 1A St. Mary's is now 10-0, dropping Alta Aurelia to 2-10.  


Alta Aurelia took the boys contest 60-49, in a game that featured nine lead changes and eight ties.  

St. Mary's didn't trail in the 1st quarter, and held a 14-9 lead after eight minutes.  The Warriors went ahead for the first time at 19-16, and led 23-19 at the half.  The Panthers led by as many as seven during the 1st half, and Alta Aurelia's biggest lead was six.  

The lead changed hands seven times in the 3rd quarter alone, and the score was tied 39-39 going to the 4th as Braden Sonksen hit a three for the Warriors near the end of the 3rd.  An old fashioned three-point play by Tanner Randall ignited the Warriors on a 17-2 stretch to start the 4th quarter, which included a pair of threes by Lane Kraemer.  

Randall had 20 points, and Sonksen had 19.  For St. Mary's, Mason Laven hit six threes for the second game in a row, and finished with 22.  Pablo Pasquel had 14.  

Alta Aurelia improves to 4-6, and St. Mary's is now 3-7.

The Alta Aurelia games at home on Thursday against Storm Lake will be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM.    

The St. Mary's teams play at East Sac on Friday, weather permitting.
