Storm Lake St. Mary's vs South Central Calhoun Basketball Recap

The #9 in 1A St. Mary's girls remained undefeated after their 42-37 win over #10 in 2A South Central Calhoun at the Panther Pit on Friday. 

South Central Calhoun had two leads, both by one point in the 1st half.  St. Mary's led 14-9 after the 1st quarter.  A 6-0 run gave SCC at 15-14 advantage, but a four-point play by Danika Demers gave the Panthers the lead for good, and started a 6-0.  The Titans closed the 2nd half strong to cut the St. Mary's halftime lead to 20-19. 

St. Mary's hit four of their eight threes in the 3rd quarter, which helped them to a 34-28 lead going to the 4th.  Down the stretch, the Panthers lead grew as big as ten points, but a 6-0 run got SCC within 39-35.  Danika Demers hit consecutive free throws with 34 seconds left, and then another with 19 seconds left to seal it. 

Demers led St. Mary's with 17 points.  Kylee Schleisman scored 12 for SCC, and Riley Batta had 11. 

St. Mary's is now 9-0, and 5-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference, dropping South Central Calhoun to 9-2, 2-2. 


The South Central Calhoun boys stayed perfect with their 70-38 win over St. Mary's. 

The Titans never trailed, and led 16-8 after the 1st quarter, 33-13 at the half, and 54-24 after the 3rd.  They broke it open in the 4th with a 16-0 run. 

Four SCC players scored in double-figures, led by Josh Dietrich with 18.  Mason Laven hit six three-pointers as part of a 20 point performance. 

The SCC boys are now 10-0, and 4-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference.  St. Mary's goes to 3-6, 2-4.

The South Central Calhoun teams play this coming Tuesday, January 11th at Humboldt. 

The St. Mary's squads visit Alta Aurelia on Tuesday.  They'll be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM, and video streamed on our website.
