Buena Vista University alumni joined friends, staff, faculty, and students in raising more than $54,000 for BVU on Giving Tuesday, establishing a standard for the day celebrated as an international day of generosity.
Some 280 givers contributed $54,020 on Tuesday. Gifts to BVU came from residents in 19 states, the District of Columbia, and Europe. Benefactors on the day ranged in age from 19 to 79.
“This was an historic day for the University as it relates to Giving Tuesday,” says President Brian Lenzmeier, who joined his wife, Betsy, in contributing matching funds for gifts received by first-time donors. Of those givers, 68 gave to BVU for the first time.
“Alumni showed their kindness to us and their faith in what we’re doing by contributing gifts that ranged from thousands of dollars to amounts of $10 and $20,” Lenzmeier continues. “We’re grateful to everyone who checked in on the activity as we watched giving totals rise throughout the day. Your contributions will make a profound difference in the lives of hundreds of students as they continue their BVU journey.”
Joshua Tigges (pictured above), a sophomore digital media major from Carroll, was one of dozens of students who penned thank you notes to benefactors on Tuesday. Cheer and Dance Team members made a couple of appearances during the daylong celebration, one highlighted with performances by the members of the BVU Choir, the Jazz Band and BVU Marching Blue.
“The reasons I’m proud to be a Beaver are because of the opportunities I’ve experienced and the personal connections I’ve made with my professors,” Tigges says. “My success is because of you. I’m forever grateful.”
“The support we received from donors on Giving Tuesday was remarkable,” says Vice President for Advancement Joan Canty. “The generosity shown by our friends, alumni, faculty, staff, and students throughout the year leave us both honored and humbled. But to see the breadth of support and enthusiasm across ‘Beaver Nation’ for an entire day, which included an extraordinary Trustee match, was exhilarating. These gifts will help strengthen our faculty and staff in providing the best learning environment and experiential learning opportunities for our students.”
Donations made on Giving Tuesday are earmarked for the BVU Annual Fund or BVU Athletics. Support received on this day does everything from keeping state-of-the-art facilities in pristine condition to supporting the work of our faculty and staff to providing hands-on research and internship opportunities for students.
Coaches and staff members with BVU Athletics use funding assistance from Giving Tuesday to offset travel expenses for their teams, upgrade equipment, purchase uniforms, and more.
The University’s next global giving-day collaboration occurs on April 7, 2022, as BVU celebrates International Beaver Day. For more information about BVU’s Giving Tuesday success and more, see bvu.edu/beaversgive.
