Storm Lake Girls Win Opener ; Snap Skid vs East Sac

The Storm Lake girls basketball team rallied for a season opening 52-34 win over East Sac County on Friday at Tornado Fieldhouse.

The victory marks the first time the Tornadoes have won an opener since 2009, breaking a 12-game losing streak to East Sac in the process.  

The Raiders had the early advantage, as they began on a 7-0 run.  A three-pointer by Carly Fischer in the final seconds of the 1st quarter put East Sac up 13-4 after eight minutes.  Early in the 2nd quarter, the Raiders built their biggest lead at 15-4, but the Tornadoes scored 11 points in succession to end the half.  A three by Amy Slight in the final seconds made the score 15-15 at the break.  

East Sac began the 2nd half scoring with a Mary Bontrager three.  The Tornadoes answered with four straight points, and took their first lead on a breakaway layup by Maddy Raveling.  The Raiders regained the lead moments later thanks to a basket by Kaytlyn Sagert, but Storm Lake took the lead for good by scoring the next five points.  Storm Lake seized command with a 12-0 run from late in the 3rd into the 4th quarter, which included a layup by Adeeya Yanga near the end of the 3rd.  East Sac got no closer than nine points during the 4th quarter.  

The freshman Yanga scored a game-high 23 points, including 21 from the 2nd quarter on.  Slight chipped in 14 points, including all three of the team's threes.  Raveling, another freshman, added 8 points.  The Tornadoes converted 17 of their 23 free throw attempts, including 16 of 19 in the 2nd half.

Bontrager led the Raiders with 13.  She had three of East Sac's seven three-pointers.  Fischer and Makenna Steiger each had two.  East Sac's next game is November 30th, when the girls and boys visit Woodbury Central.  

The Storm Lake girls go against Sioux Central in the Jamboree at Tornado Fieldhouse this Saturday, November 20th in the 8pm matchup.  Their next game is this coming Tuesday, November 23rd when they host South Central Calhoun, which will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA.
