November 05, 2021 11:03pm

The OA-BCIG football team scored 22 unanswered points in the final five minutes of the game but it was too late to overcome a 34-6 deficit as they lost at Southeast Valley 34-28 Friday night at Gowrie in a class 2A quarterfinal playoff game.

The Jaguars scored touchdowns on their first three possessions of the game building a 20-0 lead and would later get a six yard scoop and score from Justin Losekey to put them up 26-0 at halftime.

The Falcons scored on their first possession of the 2nd half on a 14 yard touchdown run by Griffin Diersen, the 2-point conversion failed and the score was 26-6.  The Jaguars came right back with a eleven play drive that consumed nearly seven minutes resulting in a score to make it 34-6 after their two-point conversion was good.

After the Falcons lost a fumble with 1:47 to go in the 3rd quarter the Jaguars went on a 12 play drive that eventually resulted in a punt but the drive chewed up almost nine minutes off the clock.  OA-BCIG got the ball back on their own 20 after that punt with 4:55 to go in the game.  Beckett DeJean would then hit Karson Quirk on a 16 yard touchdown pass capping off a ten play-80 yard drive, DeJean would run in the two-point conversion and the score was 34-14.  The Falcons then recovered an onside kick at the Jaguars 22 yard line.  Three plays later DeJean hit Josh Peters with a 20 yard TD pass and DeJean would then complete a pass to Easton Harms for the two point conversion and it was 34-22 with 1:25 left in the game.

After a Falcon onside kick was recovered by Southeast Valley the OA-BCIG defense forced a three and out and they would then get the ball back at their own 30 yard line with 50 seconds left to play after the punt.  Two plays later DeJean hit Gabe Winterrrowd on a 47 yard touchdown pass with 18 seconds left to make it 34-28.  The two point conversion failed and the Falcons would line up for another onside kick.  Kelton Ladwig delivered another perfect attempt and the Falcons recovered the football at the Jaguars 43 yard line with 15 seconds left in the game. DeJean had time for two passes but both were incomplete and the hope of going back to the UNI-Dome for the 3rd straight year was ended.

OA-BCIG had 274 yards of offense with DeJean going 18-for-38 for 175 yards and three touchdowns.  He also had a six yard touchdown run called back by a penalty in the first quarter.  Diersen ran the ball nine times for 86 yards.

Southeast Valley had 255 total yards and quarterback Karson Kruse ran the ball 25 times for 165 yards, he ran for a score and passed for two more.  The Jaguars were held to 57 yards of offense in the 2nd half.

OA-BCIG concludes the year with a record of 9-2 and they graduate eight seniors.  Southeast Valley is now 10-1 and will play Waukon in the 2A semi-finals Saturday, November 13th at 10am.
