October 30, 2021 7:49am

Newell Fonda scored 33 unanswered points from late in the 2nd into the 4th quarter in their 39-14 win at previously unbeated Lenox in the 2nd round of the Eight-Player postseason.

After each team started the game with a punt, Lenox appeared as if they'd break through on their second possession, but fumbled inside the Mustangs five-yard line, and Seth Menke recovered for Newell Fonda.

Both teams went three-and-out following that turnover.  Newell Fonda then put together an eight-play, 60 yard drive that lasted 3:29.  A 35 yard touchdown run by Mason Dicks put the Mustangs up 6-0 with under six minutes to go in the 1st half.  The point-after attempt missed wide left.

A short kickoff and late hit out-of-bounds penalty set Lenox up at the Mustang's 33 yard line.  Six plays later, the Tigers were in the end zone thanks to a 16 yard run by Isaac Grundman, who also ran in the two-point attempt to put Lenox up 8-6 with 2:26 left in the 1st half.

Newell Fonda answered right back with a seven-play, 63 yard touchdown march.  Dicks' 13 yard run, and ensuing two-point run gave the Mustangs a 14-8 lead with 1:10 to go in the half, and they took that lead into halftime.

The Mustangs took the 2nd half kickoff, and stitched together a ten-play, 62 yard drive that covered 4:07.  Dicks 14 yard touchdown throw to Wyatt Kreft extended the lead to 21-8.

The following Lenox lasted over five minutes, but they were turned away on downs when a 4th and 1 play was stopped at the Newell Fonda 14 yard line.  The Mustangs went 66 yards in ten plays in a drive that chewed 4:40 off the clock.  A 17 yard run by Dicks increased the lead to 27-8 with 9:30 left in the game.

On the first play on the next series, Dicks intercepted a pass to give the Mustangs the ball right back at the Tigers 38 yard line.  It took seven plays for Newell Fonda to find the end zone again, as a quarterback sneak gave Dicks his 5th touchdown of the night to make the score 33-8.

The final Mustangs points came when Ryan Greenfield intercepted a pass on the next drive and returned it for a 35 yard touchdown.  The ensuing drive ended with a one yard touchdown run by Grundman with under four minutes left for the final margin.

Newell Fonda outgained Lenox 377 yards to 232, and won the turnover battle 3-0.  Dicks completed 12 of 17 passes for 154 yard, and ran nine times for 114 yards.  Kreft carried 14 times for 72 yards.  Trey Jungers had seven receptions for 83 yards.
