Newell Fonda Volleyball Falls in Region Final Heartbreaker

7th-ranked Newell Fonda's bid for their first ever state volleyball berth came up painfully short in their fifth consecutive region final, as the Mustangs were defeated in five sets by #10 Janesville in a 1A region championship match played in Clarion on Wednesday.

Newell Fonda rallied from a 24-19 deficit in the opening set, as they scored six consecutive points, and eventually took the opener 27-25.  The Mustangs trailed in that set by as many as ten points.   

Janesville led most of the way in the second set, which they won 25-21.  In the third set, Newell Fonda stayed ahead after going up 5-4.  They led by as many as five, and won it 25-21.  

The fourth set produced five lead changes, and 11 ties.  The Mustangs were up 23-21, and soon after were serving for the match with a 24-23 lead, but Janesville scored the last three to win 26-24 to send the match to a deciding fifth set.  

Newell Fonda led for most of set number five.  After the Wildcats scored first, Newell Fonda tallied the next three points, and built their biggest lead of the set at 10-6.  Janesville went on a 5-1 run to tie it at 11-11.  The Mustangs went ahead 12-11, and then 13-12, but couldn't finish as Janesville scored three consecutive points to earn their 12th consecutive state appearance.  

Janesville is now 25-15, while the Mustangs wrap up at 28-4.  Newell Fonda's four seniors include Macy Sievers, Elise Hinders, Sophie Stewart, and Anna Bellcock.
