Alta Aurelia Owns 2nd Half in Win at Hinton

September 10, 2021 11:19pm

The Alta Aurelia football team used 29 unanswered points in the 2nd half to improve to 3-0 for the first time ever in their 43-26 win at Hinton.

An interception set up Hinton's first score of the game, as a 15 yard touchdown pass from Glen Carlson to Beau DeRocher made it 7-0.  The Warriors retaliated with a 67 yard touchdown throw from Carson Reinert to Gavin Sleezer, and Luis Mendoza's PAT tied the game.

Hinton was then forced to punt, which Preston McCoy returned 80 yards to the end zone to give Alta Aurelia a 14-7 advantage.  The Blackhawks had their way for the rest of the 1st half.  Carlson threw a nine yard touchdown to DeRocher, but the point after missed to make it 14-13.  Alta Aurelia proceeded to go three and out.  The Warriors put was blocked, and recovered in the end zone by Hinton to put them back in front at 19-14.  Alta Aurelia started their next drive at their own 47, but turned it over on downs at the Hinton 17 yard line.  Carlson's third touchdown, and 82 yarder to Caden Winters increased Hinton's lead to 26-14 with 8:38 to go at the half, and it stayed that way at halftime.

The 2nd half began with a turnover on downs, followed by consecutive punts.  Cale Brechwald intercepted a pass that gave the Warriors the ball at the Hinton 45 yard line.  Four plays later, Alta Aurelia narrowed the gap on a 34 yard pass from Reinert to McCoy, to make the score 26-21.  Hinton ran three plays, and a 4th down punt was blocked, which set up the Warriors at the Hinton five yard line.  After a one yard loss on 1st down, a six yard touchdown run by Reinert on the opening play of the 4th quarter gave Alta Aurelia the lead for good.  A two point conversion pass from Reinert to McCoy made it 29-26.

Following another Hinton punt, McCoy galloped 80 yards for a touchdown that gave Alta Aurelia a 36-26 lead with 6:59 remaining.  After two three and outs and a turnover on downs, a 48 yard touchdown throw from Reinert to Lane Kraemer on a 3rd and 5 play, and Mendoza's PAT provided the final margin.

225 of Alta Aurelia's 344 yards of offense were in the 2nd half.  By contrast, Hinton had 352 yard offensively, but only 96 after halftime.

Reinert passed for 187 yards.  McCoy rushed 12 times for 116 yards.

The 3-0 Warriors are now 2-0 in Class A District 1.  Alta Aurelia hosts South O'Brien next Friday.  Hinton drops to 1-2, 1-1.
