Newell Fonda Baseball Season Ends in Substate Final

July 21, 2021 6:17am

A nine-run 2nd inning gave 3rd-ranked Remsen St. Mary's an insurmountable lead in their 11-0 five-inning substate final win over Newell Fonda on Tuesday in Cherokee.

With one out in the top of the 1st, Trey Jungers reached base on a dropped third strike, and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch.  Jungers was left stranded however after a flyout and strikeout.  Remsen St. Mary's scored a run in the bottom half, as Levi Waldschmitt tripled with one out, and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly.

The Hawks put the game away with the nine-run 2nd, in which they sent 13 batters to the plate.  They added another run in the 3rd inning.

Besides Jungers in the 1st, the only other Mustangs batter to reach was Ryan Greenfield on a leadoff infield single in the 5th.

Winning pitcher Blaine Harpenau moves to 12-0 on the season, as he struck out nine.  Remsen St. Mary's (26-3) advances to the 1A state tournament for the sixth year in a row.

Newell Fonda's season concludes at 21-7.  They'll bid farewell to five seniors, including Hogan Henrich, Tanner Gerke, Alex Spangler, Gabe Sievers, and Hunter Christiansen.
