Dutch Defeat Storm Lake In Sub-state Final

July 21, 2021 9:06pm

MOC-Floyd Valley pitchers Colton Korver and Kleyton De Groot combined on a three hitter and the Dutch defeated Storm Lake 1-0 in a class 3A sub-state final played Wednesday night in Storm Lake.

The only run of the game was scored in the 4th inning when Carson Jager led off with an infield single, he then stole 2nd base. Kooper Huss then hit a hard bunt down the third baseline that Tornado 3rd baseman Pako Gonzales fielded but no one covered 1st base and that infield single put runners at 1st and 3rd with no outs.  The next batter was Korver who pushed a bunt up the first baseline that easily scored Jager with the games only run.

Mark Eddie was saddled with a tough luck loss going all seven innings allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out 12 and walking two.

Korver threw the first five innings and gave up only three hits, he struck out four walked three and hit one batter.  He then came back into the game to get the final out.  De Groot set down all five batters he faced including three strikeouts.

The Tornadoes best chances to score started with two outs in the 3rd inning, Mark Eddie singled and Jake Eddie was then hit by a pitch.  With runners at 1st and 2nd base Korver then got Ben Raveling to fly out to left field.  Storm Lake had another threat in the 5th inning when with two outs Mark Eddie singled again, Jake Eddie then got a base hit.  Ben Raveling then walked to load the bases but Korver would get Jailen Hansen to fly out to right field.

MOC-Floyd Valley will take a 27-8 to the 3A state tournament which starts next week in Iowa City.  The Tornadoes finish the year with a record of 27-6.  Click below to hear comments from Tornado coach Ben Seaman.
