City Council Approves Airport Commission Ordinance Amendment

July 21, 2021 10:37am

The Storm Lake City Council this week on a 3-1 vote approved amending the city code pertaining to certain nonresidents of the City to be appointed to, and serve on the Airport Commission.

Discussions were held at the previous two council meetings regarding changes they would like to have in the ordinance. Three of the five Storm Lake Airport Commission members must be residents living within City limits...and no more than two members that are non-city residents must reside in Buena Vista County, and own property within City limits, or have at least a 25-percent entity within City limits. Non-city residents would not be able to serve as the Chair of the Airport Commission.

City Manager Keri Navratil said if any other board or commission requested a change, it would have to come before the council as an ordinance change, except the Library Board which would require a public vote.

Council member Kevin McKinney voted against the ordinance change because of language stating that the change is also for other city commissions, boards, and agencies. City Attorney Phil Havens said that agenda information was incorrect, but qualification changes for other commissions was accurate, and the resolution was worded correctly.
